The Arc of Greater Boone County, in collaboration with the Boone County Economic Development Corporation (Boone EDC) and Boone County government, is thrilled to announce the first award from the 180 in Color public art initiative. A $23,900 grant has been awarded to support the creation of a sensory arts garden, to be located at the corner of Drake and Main Streets in Lebanon. This unique project is designed to enhance public spaces through art, nature, and sensory engagement.
The 180 in Color program, funded by the 180 Alliance region’s READI 1.0 initiative, aims to enrich communities across Boone County with vibrant public art installations. The sensory arts garden is the first of many projects planned, with more exciting announcements to come in late 2024.
Pam Verbarg, Executive Director of The Arc of Greater Boone County, shared her enthusiasm for the garden’s impact: “This sensory arts garden represents years of dedication. It will offer both individuals with disabilities and the general public a unique, interactive space for relaxation and connection with nature. We are so proud to bring this project to our community.”
Molly Whitehead, CEO of Boone EDC, added, “Public art projects like this do more than beautify our spaces; they strengthen our community connections and contribute to Boone County’s economic growth. By investing in public art, we’re investing in our county’s future.”
The sensory arts garden will be located along the scenic Big 4 Trail and will feature a fully accessible design with opportunities for visitors to explore sensory interactions with nature, music, and art. The total project cost is estimated at $47,800, with a 50% matching requirement. While the grant covers half the cost, the community is invited to contribute to raising the remaining $23,900.
Donations can be made through the Community Arts Endowment at the Community Foundation of Boone County to help bring this project to life.
